Vessel Security
On July 1, 2004, the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) International Ship and Port Facility Security
Code (ISPS) took effect. The IMO is a specialized agency of the United Nations that focuses on the improvement of safety at sea and the prevention of pollution from vessels.
Under the code, all affected vessels wishing to carry on trading will require an International Ship Security Certificate. Affected vessels will not be allowed to enter some international waters without appropriate certification. These certificates are required to facilitate entry to ISPS
code-compliant marine facilities in the UK and abroad; are valid for five years and subject to periodic verification. |

Code requirements will strengthen marine security in the UK and around the world. All commercial vessels of 500 tons (gross tonnage) or more, or
those carrying more than twelve passengers and travelling between countries, are subject to the new requirements, which include the completion of security assessments, security plans and the designation of security officers. SAL Risk Group can assist in ensuring that marine companies and vessels are code-compliant and smooth the way for certification. |

Port Security
After an initial on-site survey and report, the process of developing
both the Security Assessment and final Security Plan must be completed quickly to ensure continued trading in compliance with International legislation. SAL Risk Group has developed a template to expedite the on-scene survey process. Risk assessment methodology hinges around efficient systems which identify vulnerabilities for ships and port facilities and their areas of operation. |

Port Security is now a matter of international concern and is under continued threat; not just from terrorism but from every day crime. Expert staff training
including an understanding of 'layered security' is essential to be able to detect, deter and respond to threats effectively.
Through effective training and close liaison with the man on the ground, SAL Risk Group ensures
that whatever security systems are in place, the desired measure of response will be correctly managed.
Similarly, the most elaborate security plan is restrictive if it is neither
practical nor workable. Our consultants have many years
of experience protecting ports in high-risk areas where cost has been a major consideration. |

Piracy Prevention
Navigating through the world's major shipping routes has always been seen as a risk, but in certain areas of the globe this risk is increasing. Sea robbery, kidnap, armed assault and the threat of maritime terrorism are putting new pressures on private owners, masters, crew and companies. We can provide the relevant training to
a vessel's crew, ranging from simply raising their awareness of which actions to take in the event of a piracy attack, to providing
onboard security escorts.
SAL Risk Group's training of personnel is one of the most sophisticated in the security industry. We train our teams to recognise that our client's priority is to maintain the safety of their staff and keep their business running. All operations are supported by up-to-date intelligence and analysis by maritime security and counter-terrorism experts.
We work within the laws of the states passed
through as well as requirements dictated by the IMO, SOLAS and ISPS. |
